UNESCO riches to be shown in Kiev

This exhibition was demonstrated in Switzerland, Russia, and Norway. After Kiev it will move to Copenhagen, Paris, and Brussels.

For over 35 years, since the adoption of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage by the UNESCO General Conference in 1972, UNESCO has been working with countries around the world to identify World Heritage sites and ensure their safekeeping for future generations. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world’s cultural and natural heritage. The World Heritage List counts today 878 cultural, natural and mixed sites. They illustrate the diversity of our planet and its inhabitants and are ours to share, to cherish and to respect. Their disappearance would be a loss to humanity.

UNESCO’s World Heritage mission is to:

• encourage countries to sign the World Heritage Convention and to ensure the protection of their natural and cultural heritage;
• encourage States Parties to the Convention to nominate sites within their national territory for inclusion on the World Heritage List;
• encourage States Parties to establish management plans and set up reporting systems on the state of conservation of their World Heritage sites;
• assist States Parties in safeguarding World Heritage sites by providing technical assistance and professional training;
• provide emergency assistance for World Heritage sites in immediate danger;
• support States Parties’ public awareness-building activities for World Heritage conservation;
• encourage participation of the local population in the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage;
• encourage international cooperation in the conservation of our world’s cultural and natural heritage.

Established in 1992, the World Heritage Centre, part of UNESCO’s Culture Sector, is the focal point and coordinator within the Organization for all matters related to World Heritage. Assuring the day-to-day management of the Convention, the Centre organizes the annual sessions of the World Heritage Committee, provides advice to States Parties in the preparation of site nominations, organizes international assistance from the World Heritage Fund, and co-ordinates both the reporting on the condition of sites and the emergency action undertaken when a site is threatened. The Centre also organizes expert meetings and workshops, updates the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger, database and web site, develops teaching materials to raise awareness among young people of the need for heritage preservation, and keeps the public informed on World Heritage issues.

Tom Till is one of America’s most published photographers. Over 30,000 of his images have appeared in print since 1977. In 1998, Till opened the Tom Till Gallery in Moab, Utah. Till was named Arizona Highways Photographer of the Year in 1996, received the NANPA/Guilfoyle award for landscape photography in 1994, and was chosen as one of the ten best landscape photographers by Nature’s Best Magazine. Till received a special award from The Nature Conservancy in 1998. In 2006, Till was awarded the prestigious NANPA Fellow Award for 20 years of excellence in nature photography. Till is one of only a few landscape photographers to receive the honor, and the only Utahan. Also in 2006, Till was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"I have a great job, and I feel very lucky and blessed to spend my life in the world’s most beautiful places. The first, and biggest thrill, is being in the field all the time. Although I get a great deal of personal satisfaction and fun from my work, photography is really about sharing what you are experiencing with others not lucky or patient enough to be there themselves. It’s also about noticing things everyone else passes by. The other great moments are the 25 or so "Christmases" I have yearly when my film comes back from the lab, and the thrill I still get from seeing my work in print," says Till.
