The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the list of memorable trees of Ukraine

The Minister of environmental protection of Ukraine Nikolai Zlochevskiy has signed the Order “About summarizing the results of the all-Ukrainian contest “The National tree of Ukraine”.

The contest was held in four nominations. The 2000-year-old olive tree from the Nikitskiy Botanical Garden was acknowledged the oldest tree in Ukraine.

Below here is the list of national Ukrainian trees – the winners of all-Ukrainian contest “The national tree of Ukraine”

Nomination “The oldest tree in Ukraine”

Two oldest trees in Ukraine are located in Nikitskiy Botanical Garden in Crimea. The first place belongs to the 2000-year-old olive tree; the second place takes the 1700-year-old pistachio tree (both are situated in Nikitskiy Botanical Garden, Crimea). The third place belongs to the 1300-year-old oak tree “Champion” (Stuzhitsa, Velikobereznyanskiy district, Zakarpatskaya region)

Nomination “Memorial tree of Ukraine”

800-year old lime tree of Bogdan Khmelnitskiy (Sasiv – Koltov highway, Zolochevskiy district, Lvov region) takes the first place. The second place belongs to the three 1000-year-old Taras Shevchenko`s oak trees (Budishye town, Zvenigorod district, Cherkassy region). The 1000-year-old oak tree of Maksim Zaliznyak (Buda town, Chigirin district, Chrerkassy region) took the third place.

Nomination “Historical tree of Ukraine”

The first place belongs to 700 year-old Zaporozhye oak tree (Khortitsa Island, Zaporozhye), the second – to “Yuzefinskiy” oak tree (Gliny town, Rokitnov district, Rovno region).

The third place in this nomination was divided between several trees: 600-year-old golden lime tree (Buchach town, Buchach district, Ternopol region), 200-year-old almond tree on Malakhov burial mound (Sevastopol), 120-year-old oak tree of “Franz Joseph”(Lysovichi town, Striya district, Lvov region).

Nomination “Esthetically valuable tree of Ukraine”

The first place belongs to 900-year-old Gryunevald oak tree (sanatorium “Zhovten”, Goloseyev district, Kiev). 1300 –year old madrono tree Any (Ai-Nikola, Oreanda, Crimea) took the second place.

The third place in this nomination is divided between two trees: 250-year-old “Princess” apple tree in Krolevets (Krolevets district, Sumy region) and 800-year old “Monastic” oak tree located in Mezinsk National Nature Park (Ryhly, Korop district, Chernigov region).

On March 16, new real identity rules imposed on China’s microblogging platform Weibo go into effect; dubbed “Weibocalypse” by China’s internet community . The Provisions on Administration of Weiboke Development (the Provisions) include core provisions in Article 6, which requires pre approvals by the Beijing city authority before launching a Weibo account, and Article 9, which requires that a user provide his or her true identity. Chen Jihong, a Beijing-based partner at Zhong Lun Law Firm said that “overall, the Provisions regulate not only issues of approval and true identity, but also general issues including compliance with the law and privacy protection”.

Kyiv, December 28, 2011. A famous Ukrainian folk singer Oleg Skrypka performed a renewed version of the winter holiday classic Carol of the Bells originally composed by Ukrainian Mykola Leontovych. This new rendition of the world renowned tune became a soundtrack for the freshly released Ukrainian animation film Shchedryk.

A painting by a Ukrainian artist set a new record at the Phillips de Pury & Co auction that took place in London on October 13, 2011. The art piece “Horse.Night” by Anatoliy Kryvolap was sold for USD 124,4 thousand which is the highest a painting by a contemporary Ukrainian artist ever grossed at an art auction.

A Polish artist Jaroslaw Koziara created two giant images of fish on the grass on each side of the Polish-Ukrainian border. The tail of the first image lies on the territory of Poland with its head on the Ukrainian territory. The second fish is positioned facing the opposite direction. The artist intends to send the message of unity of the two countries – nature and art know no borders.
