Culture news > Ukraine to Host 32nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

Ukraine will host the 32nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in 2013. The respective agreement has been signed between the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation in Lausanne, Switzerland. The official FIG statement explains that Ukraine deserves the honor of hosting this major sports event being “a country that boasts such a rich Gymnastics tradition and has long been one of Rhythmic Gymnastics’ leading lights”.

The 32nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will take place at Palats Sportu, a major sports arena in the country, in Kyiv on September 14-24, 2013. This will be the first time that Ukraine hosts a rhythmic gymnastics event of this scale. The FIG President, Professor Bruno Grandi, and the President of the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation, Igor Korobchinsky, agreed to grant the honor of hosting the Championships to Ukraine since Ukraine produced numerous champions in the sport.

Largely, Ukraine owes its rhythmic gymnastics champions to the celebrated school founded and led by Albina Deriugina and her daughter Irina, who herself was an absolute world champion in 1977 and 1979. The annual rhythmic gymnastics competition Deriugina Cup holds a World Cup status since 2007.

The graduate of the Deriugina school is Hanna Bessonova – one of the world's best contemporary rhythmic gymnasts. Another Ukrainian gymnast, who became successful at the World Championships and the Olympics is Olena Vitrychenko. She was trained by her late mother Nina, a former official FIG expert.

Significant achievements of Ukrainian rhythmic gymnasts include winning bronze medals at the Olympics of 2008 and 2004 by Hanna Bessonova, an absolute world rhythmic gymnastics champion of 2007. Also, Ukrainian Kateryna Serebrianska is an absolute world rhythmic gymnastics champion of 1995 and an absolute Olympic champion of 1996. Other Ukrainian gymnast Olena Vitrychenko won bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games.

The World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were first held in Budapest, Hungary, in 1963. 29 countries competed in the latest Games of the Championships in 2010.

The upcoming 31st World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will return to France for the third time and will take place in Montpellier on September 19-25, 2011. Spain hosted the Championships the record amount of five times.
