Ukrainian historians confirmed the date of founding of St.Sofia's Cathedral

Ukrainian historians are confident that St. Sofia Cathedral of Kyiv was founded by prince Volodymyr the Baptist, who christened Rus in 1011, and built completely by his son Yaroslav the Wise in 1018.
Such opinion was expressed at the round table in Kyiv which was dedicated to the issue of fixing the date of building of St. Sofia’s of Kyiv.
As it is known there are two dates of St. Sofia’s foundation: 1037 in The Primary Chronicle and 1017 in The Novgorodian Chronicle.

In the point of view of head of scientific  and historical research of the National Preserve St. Sofia Cathedral of Kyiv Nadiya Nikitenko the chronicle dates of St. Sofia of Kyiv’s foundation are artificially referred to main years of Yaroslav the Wise’s reign.

‘’Yaroslav occupied the Kyiv throne not by his father’s will but in the result of internecine feuds with other descendants of Volodymyr;  it was important for Yaroslav to announce himself as a legitimate ruler of  Volodymyr the Baptist’s most worthy heir. That’s why his chroniclers presented construction of St. Sofia’s, the main most sacred object, by him as the most important deed of his’’, - said  Nadiya Nikitenko.
Instead in her opinion such non annalistic sources as The Sermon on Law and Grace by Illarion of 1022 and Titmar Merzeburg’s chronicle of 1018 state that the beginnings of St. Sofia are referred to the times of Volodymyr.  ‘’Their evidence as for appearance of  St. Sofia’s in the second decade of the 11th century is confirmed by results of contemporary research”, - assured the Doctor of Historical Sciences.

According to her St. Sofia’s itself presents the most authentic data as far as its origins are concerned. And the most important significance in this connection are dated graffiti on its walls.

“Spotted on frescos in different places graffiti of 1018, 1021, 1022, 1028, 1033, 1036 refute 1037 as the year of St Sofia’s foundation or completion. The same is with 1017 since graffiti are assuredly evident that up to 1018-1021 the cathedral was put up and decorated with murals which means that St. Sofia’s  appeared in the second decade of the 11th century”, -  said Nadiya Nikitenko.

She also stated that having compared consecration dates of St. Sofia with this time one can date its foundation or consecration by Sunday November the 4th 1011 and completion of consecration, inauguration, by Sunday May the 11th 1018. Besides days of consecration of St. Sofia’s, Sunday November the 4th and   May the 11th actually coincide with the foundation and consecration of Constantinople – the new Jerusalem of the Christian world.

“Constantinople’s foundation took place on Sunday on the 8th of November 324 and on Sunday on the 11th of May 330 consecration of the city occurred which in 1011 fell on the 4th of November. Oriented to the sacral pattern, the time of establishing of St. Sofia’s, was subjected to the concept  of Kyiv as the new Jerusalem, which is confirmed by the key consecration sign “, said Nadiya Nikitenko.
