Kiev is a unique capital. It has no single center, where one can see all places of interest at once. We will start our route from the old Kiev settlement, the Slavic Acropolis, where we will learn about the Old Russian history of the city. St. Andrew`s Descent runs down from here, the Bulgakov`s one, under the witch`s Bald Mountain, passing the graceful and wonderful St. Andre`s Church and the strange “Richard`s Castle”, then runs down to Podol.

We return to the Top City. Two grand cathedrals are located here opposite each other: Mikhailovskiy Zlatoverhiy, named like this after Kiev`s protector archangel Mikhail, and St. Sophia`s Cathedral. The Temple is famous for its mosaic and frescos, there are not any other equal to which in degree of preservation in Europe. This is a real encyclopedia of Old Russian life. The Cathedral is on the list of world heritage of UNESCO.

We move on and see The Golden Gate, which used to be the main entrance to the city, in its former beauty. Then you will see the building of Kiev Opera Theatre, built on basis of results of world-wide contest at the very beginning of the 20th century. From here our way lays to another significant Temple of the capital — St. Vladimir`s Cathedral. This temple, built in Byzantine style, was painted by great artists Vasnetsov, Nesterov and Vrubel. Relics of St. Varvara, who is equally honored both in Orthodoxy and Catholicism, lie in the Temple. Kiev National University, painted in unusual red-black colors and the cozy Shevchenko Park with the main city monument to the Ukrainian genius are nearby.

Once you are on Kreshchatik Street, you`d better stop and actually imbibe the spirit of festive, “cake” architecture of 1950th. Almost completely restored after war destructions, it has become the relic of that epoch, the whole ensemble kept in one style. But the central square of the city — Independence Square — was reconstructed for several decades. Now, finally, it is time to see the panorama of the Dnieper. In Mariinskiy Park the Palace of the same name raises — now the main residence of the President, built according to drawings of the great architect B. Rastrelli. Elite mansions of Lipky — aristocratic area of three centuries, keep their secrets and legends. “The house with Chimeras”, built by architect Gorodetskiy, is definitely the most famous of them. It used to be the main “VIP apartment” of the city. You cannot say you have been in Kiev without seeing it.

Getting to Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, we will learn about history of this first Old Russian Monastery, will be able to see its architectural monuments, which were created for eight centuries. The Giant Bell Tower of the Monastery is the highest one in Ukraine. Hundreds of Saints and just men are buried in caves of the cloister — this is the biggest and the oldest necropolis in Ukraine. Above the steep slopes behind Lavra we can see huge monument to Motherland, the foundation of which hosts the National Museum of the World War Two. This highest statue in Ukraine (104 meters high) completes panorama of Dnieper slopes.
