It is the largest museum complex in Ukraine devoted to the Second World War. It was opened May 9, 1981.The area of the Memorial Complex is over 10 hectares big area. The complex includes the following sites: Museum of World War II with the 102 meter high monument called the Soviet Motherland, the main square with hero-cities alley and two monuments - “Crossing of the Dnieper in 1943" "Heroes of the Front and Home Front" with bronze high relief compositions; “Flames of Glory" Bowl, the open air exhibition of military equipment and weapons, the permanent exhibitions - "The tragedy and valor in Afghanistan" and "Wars in strange lands”. Li-2 transport plane, Mi-24V helicopter and MiG-23 jet fighter can be viewed inside.
The museum collection is concentrated in 16 halls. The total area is about 5 sq. km. There are more than 15 thousand artifacts in the museum. The emphasis is placed on the symbols and images perceived at the level of feelings. The elaborate concept of the museum is complemented with the proper exhibits.
The modern exposition of the museum was set in 1995. The idea is to make an emphasis on the events of World War II on the territory of Ukraine as well as to show our country’s contribution to the victory over Nazism. The exposition is set in the chronological order. It is a hard story of war. Waves of battles were rolled twice through Ukraine. The main concept of the museum is the symbolic "Road of War". The tragic and heroic history of the World War II in Ukraine is shown step by step. The most memorable site of the museum complex is, of course, the "Soviet Motherland" statue. The height of the statue from its pedestal to the tip of the sword is 62 m. The total height including the pedestal is 102 m. The weight of statue is about 500 tons. This is the biggest statue in the Ukraine and one of the tallest in the world.
