There are two observatories in Kiev. The oldest one, belonging to the University, is situated in the center of the city on Observatornaya Hill. The main Observatory, referring to the Academy of Sciences, is located in the Southern outskirts of the city, in the center of the big woodland park called “Goloseevskiy forest”. It was founded in the summer of 1944. It should be emphasized that it was only eight month after liberation of Kiev from fascists, when authorities started to think about exploring the sky of stars… The famous astronomer and geophysicist Aleksandr Orlov became the initiator of creation of the Observatory.
At our time the Observatory of the Academy of Sciences keeps observing stars and satellites, conducts researches in the spheres of astrophysics, astronomy, etc. The small planet “Goloseevo” (15675) was even named after the Observatory.
The Observatory Museum was opened on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its foundation in 2004. One can learn about scientific achievements of the Observatory, see equipment for exploration of the sky of stars here. You will be informed about history of Ukrainian and world astronomy, see interesting exhibits and items, brought by astronomers from various expeditions. Then everybody will be taken to the demonstrative telescope, where it will be possible to look through its ocular. The excursion lasts 1, 5 hours and it is surely worth it.
Excursions are conducted From Monday to Friday on prior arrangement, in case there are not less than 10 people, willing to join.
There is a list of objects, which can be seen in the sky at this moment, on the site of the Observatory. Observation in conducted in the evening (7p.m. – 9p.m), as a rule, if there is a group of not less than 5 people.
Specialists of the Observatory can also give lectures on any interesting astronomic subject. There must be audience of not less than twenty people for a lecture to be given.
