The national Shevchenko Museum is the main Shevchenko Museum of the country. Its collection includes genuine monuments connected with the outstanding son of Ukraine: originals of Shevchenko art works, documents about his life and creative work, manuscript lists of poems, rare pictures of the poet and his friends, first editions of Shevchenko books signed by the author.
The exposition includes almost all Shevchenko editions, starting with intravital ones and literature about him.
The Museum’s collection consists of more than four thousand exhibits and is placed in twenty four halls. Over eight hundred Shevchenko original pictures, portraits, paintings, etchings, the poet’s personal belongings, photocopies of his manuscripts, 533 units of record files are owned by the museum: investigation on Shevchenko case, the autographs of writers, the files on Shevchenko monuments construction, etc. The book funds of the museum include 34867 copies, of which 8181 copies are on Shevchenko theme.
Works of famous artists, sculptors, writers, composers, which reflect the poet’s epoch, his life and work are also represented in exposition halls: art works of Bryulov and Repin, Tropinin, Kramskoy, Shternberg , Sokolov, Bashilov, Trutovskiy, Zhemchuzhnikov, Soshenko, Mykeshin, Vasylkovskiy, Slastion, Krasitskiy, Izhakevich, Kasiyan, Deregus and others, works of the sculptors Kamenskiy, Klodt, Beklemishev, Balavenskiy, Kavaleridze, Lysenko, Makogon and others.
