Central Museum of Armed Forces of Ukraine was opened on June 14, 1998. The history of military forces from the Stone Age to the present day and military operations in the area of Ukraine are shown in the museum. There are weapons, uniforms, documents and photographs, banners, awards, as well as wax figures of famous warriors in the museum collection. You can see wax figures of Scythian king Athey, Prince of Kiev Svyatoslav, Danilo Galitsky and Bogdan Khmelnitsky.
The exhibition is started with the primitive tools of hunting. So you can see the first traces of man appeared on the territory of Ukraine about 1 million years ago. You can see also weapons of militant Cimmerians and Scythians, Greeks and Romans. There were Greek and Roman colony-cities on the southern coast of the Black Sea. The special large exposition is devoted to the period of Kievan Rus.
Some showcases are dedicated to the seventeenth century war headed by Bogdan Khmelnitsky against Poland. There are weapons of the Cossacks and the original sables of Tatar horsemen there. Some showcases are dedicated to the nineteenth century war against Napoleon. There are Grenadier caps, buttons and the first gun developed for a unitary Chassepot Gras cartridge there.
Events of the National Revolution of 1917-1920 are presented in the very interesting way. You can learn about the creation of military units in Ukraine during the reign of the Central Rada (Council), about the activities of the chief military secretariat of the Central Rada, about Sich Riflemen Squads. You can see some personal belongings of the Hetman P. Skoropadsky from the period of 1921-1945.
There is the special exhibition devoted to the period of World War II. There you can learn the history of military units that fought in the area of Ukraine. You can learn about the front-line operations of the Soviet Army, about UPA, about the activities of the communist guerrilla forces and the SS division Galicia. There you can see some interesting exhibits such as the picture of President Roosevelt on the U.S. aircraft transit-base in Poltava and the land-lease shirt made in USA.
The museum exhibition is dedicated to modern Ukrainian army too. There are some interesting exhibits in this part of the museum collection like turbopump for the rocket RS-18 for example.
