It is one of the most unusual Kyiv theatre-studios. According to the creators “the theatre shows mystic musical drama and comedy”. Moreover, part of its repertoire consists of plays for children. Wonder how? Then come!
At first glance there are no signs of “mystics on the stage” hidden into typical soviet building in one of the residential neighbourhoods of Kyiv. It seems that here, far from the city centre you have no chance to find any "Castle". Nevertheless, it is here. Just look, usual reality will disappear, and you will find yourself as though in another time and space.
It is already two decades a theatre with a romantic name "The Wonderful Castle" is situated in a house on Yerevanska Street. Another meaning of the word "dyvnyi"(“wonderful”) in Ukrainian – is “strange”, “whimsical”, i.e. surprising. The moment you enter the narrow corridors of the theatre, you meet the "owners" at once: the "Castle" is guarded by the guard-knights in helmets and armour. But the medieval mysticism is not barely designer’s fantasy or the hall decorations. "The world of mysteries and unusual adventures is here! All You need is to lift the veil of time…"- is written in the invitation to the "Wonderful Castle". Let’s go!
You can find here the classics, modern dramatic works, and plays of young dramatists. You can go deep into the mystic drama “The Mask of the red death” (based on the works by Edgar Allan Poe) and get through the rabbit hole in the “Alice in wonderland”. Adults can watch “An event for Fredental” by E. Sverling , “Тhe poplar” and “The great cellar” by Т. Shevchenko, “The labyrinth for a Minotaur “ by О. Ivanchenko, “The floors” by P-J. de Béranger, “A toy named Love” by М. Vishnek; comedies “The wonderful dances” based on the verse by О. Khayyám, “The skyscraper” and “An artist’s dream” by О. Ivanchenko; plastique performances “The masks of time” and “An angel and a mirror” by О. Ivanchenko. Children will be glad to meet “The fairytale about Ded Pikhto” by G. Kiyashko, ”Tale about the salt” by О. Ivanchenko, “The mysterious elixir” by А. Guryev and V. Tkachenko, “Mischievous advices” by G. Oster. Every play is rich with colours of peculiar still, costumes and recognizable classical motifs mixed with modern musical directions.
In small halls of the “Castle” the young actors of the Institute of culture named after Кarpenko-Каryi, and yet unknown schoolboys are performing as an equal. For two decades the theatre that originated in the “perestroika” restructuring epoch, found its own stage and own spectators, remaining a whimsical castle, where romanticism becomes perceptible, and mysticism - becomes clear.
Plays are shown on the stage of the theatre in 19.00 on every Thursday and in 16.00 on Sunday. Also the theatre troupe provides guest performances for children, and showground-programs.
