In the “Actor” theatre most of monoplays of Kyiv are shown. This is a theatre of one actor, one stage-director – but simultaneously a theatre of all other. The creator of the theatrical miracle - an actor - is the main figure here, and his individual discovery is set as the basis of the theatrical philosophy.

The "Actor" was created in 1987 during the so-called "perestroika (restructuring)" era. As usual, all started from the idea of one man. The artistic leader of the theatre, people’s artist of Ukraine Valentine Shestopalov began the actor career when he was 11 years old – playing the title role in the play "My friend, Kolka". After that he studied in the studio of the theatre named after Ivan Franko, Moscow State Institute of Theatre Art, worked in Lviv and later in Kyiv Theatre of Poetry, in the Theatre of Russian drama named after Lesia Ukrainka. Having such a great experience and desire to play interesting roles, incarnate own vision of the dramatic art Shestopalov came to foundation of his own theatre.

Since the experimental play "Notes of a madman" based on Gogol was never shown on the stage of the Theatre of Russian drama, Shestopalov set sail to his own "trip" on the waves of theatrical work. The first season in the theatre started in April, 1987 with play "Bench" based on O .Gelman - touching story about a man and a woman which begins as flirtation, and develop into a search of mutual understanding and support. Then Shestopalov performed the above mentioned monoplay “Notes of a madman" which drew a wide reaction in the theatrical life of Kyiv and received awards of many competitions and festivals in Ukraine and abroad. By the way, both plays are in the repertoire, and enjoy wide popularity with the audience till now.

Now the repertoire of the "Actor" consists of more than 20 plays. And the amount of the performed plays is already counted by thousands. Among them are "The emigrants" by S. Mrozhek, "The rondo" based on works by V. Rozov and Michel De Ghelderode, "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "The blue rose" by Lesia Ukrainka, a few plays for children. Monoplay "The wall" by Galyna Stefanova, which appeared on this stage, was awarded with "The Kyiv pectoral", and was met with a great ovation in Toronto, Ottawa, Wroclaw, and Riga.

Few plays of the theatre became laureates and prize winners of "The Khersones games" (in 1994), "The Slavic meeting" (in 1995), "The Artistic Berezillya", "The Kyiv pectoral" (1996, 1997, 2003) and other festivals.

On the stage of the "Actor" together with Valentine Shestopalov for a great while work keyactors of the Kyiv theatres Olga Kogut ("Bench" by O .Gelman), Alla and Oleg Masliennikov ("Play  Strindberg" by Friedrich Josef Dürrenmatt), Honoured artists Natalia Kudryavtseva ("The scream" by Т. Williams), Larysa Rusnak (Gittel and Jerry" by William Gibson), Viktor Aldoshyn  ("The Czech photo" by A. Galyn), peoples artist Lidiya Yaremchuk ("The love letters" by A. Gerni) and other.
