The theatre was created in 1980 as Theatre of Poetry, however the name "Golden gate" it got in honour of the Old Kyiv-Rus monument of architecture, in which the resonance play with the same title was performed few years after the opening of the theatre. So, it was the first time the art of theatre was successfully combined with the art of historical architecture in home theatrical practice.
The main conception of the "Golden Gate" is principle of "metaphorical direction" - aesthetic comprehension of dramaturgy, developed by the main stage-director of the theatre, honoured worker of arts of Ukraine, Professor Valeriy Patsunov. According to Valeriy Patsunov, the metaphorical direction is "the combination of spectacle, plasticity, poetry and musicality with vivid scenery and high actor skill". The author of conception defines the base idea in his book “The theatrical vertical": "The Metaphor is the Pearl of an art, explosion of Cognition, penetration in Essence of the phenomenon, transplantation in human Spirit”
The company of the "Golden gate" repeatedly was on the top in Ukrainian, former Soviet Union and international theatrical festivals. It gained the reputation of the one of the best chamber theatres of the world. On the prestige Edinburgh international festival the "Golden gate" was awarded with top 5 stars rank.
Plays "Blood and ash" by Y. Martsynkyavychus, "Mozart and i" by A. Pushkin, "Marusya Churai" by L. Kostenko, "Caligula" by A. Camus, "The murderer" by F. Dostoevsky, "Eurydice" by . J. Anouilh, "King dies" E. Ionesko, “Notre-Dame de Paris” by V. Hugo. became the adornment of the theatrical palette of Ukraine and Europe.
The troupe of the theatre is filled up by the best actors of the capital of Ukraine using the engagement system. In different years in the "Golden Gate" worked the people's artists of Ukraine Konstantyn Stepankov, Nina Matviyenko, Anatoliy Palamarenko, Anatoliy Reshetnikov; the honoured artists of Ukraine Oleksiy Vertynskyi, Larysa Rusnak, Tetyana Shelyga; top actors of theatre and cinema Dmytro Lalenkov, Anton Mukharskyi, Rymma Zyubina, Iryna Melnyk and many other.
Now the actors of almost all Kyiv theatres and cinema are performing in the plays of the theatre. Among them are people's artists of Ukraine Valeriy Sheptekyta, Volodymyr Nechyporenko, Tetyana Steblovska; the honoured artists of Ukraine Borys Kharytonov, Yuriy Muravytskyi, Mykola Oliynyk, Yuriy Samsonov, Yuriy Borysenyuk; laureates of international festivals Victor Koshevenko, Tamara Morozova, Mykola Bondar, Lesya Tyshkovska. Among the young actors of the troupe are Svitlana Savelieva, Yulia Ovchynnikova, Kateryna Savenkova, Denys Serna.
Thus, during all its history the theatre "Golden Gate” never had own building or stage. Possibly, that is the reason why the theatre, having tours abroad very often, is less known in Ukraine. However in 2006 the company was granted a right to produce a play on the one of the best Europe theatrical stages of the Kyiv academic theatre of Puppetry.
The permanent leader of theatre Valeriy Patsunov is well-known personality in the world theatrical circles. Stage-director style and theoretical ideas of Valeriy Patsunov was formed under direct influence of his great colleagues - Georgiy Tovstonogov, Yuriy Lyubimov, Anatoliy Efros, Yezhi Grotovskyi. Approbation of the original creative style Valeriy Patsunov gained in his young years on the stage of the Kyiv theatre on Lypky, creating plays which had wide resonance among an audience and theatrical elite. And only after he developed own creative platform, young stage-director accepted the offer to create the fundamentally new theatre.
Valeriy Patsunov is also a teacher and author of numerous scientifically-methodical researches on the stage-directions theory and actor skill; he wrote the book "The theatrical vertical", which gained the first prize in the Ukrainian competition "The Art of book of Ukraine” in 2004. In this book Valeriy Patsunov first in history of theatre science made an effort to research the phenomenon of the theatrical metaphorics of the 20th century on the base of genie of poetic stage-direction Gordon Craig, Vsevolod Meyerhold, Les Kurbas, Peter Brook, Yuriy Lyubimov, Robert Sturua, Eimuntas Nyakroshus, Roman Viktyuk and other, and using his own successful experience of practical theatrical metaphoristics.
