Euro-2012

EURO-2012 – Ukraine welcomes!

Ukraine will host the Championship of Europe in football together with Poland in June 2012. This will become one of key events in presentation of our country to the World as a European country with rich historical traditions, history and culture. Joint with Poland Championship will become the 14th in a chain of similar events. It will be opened on June 8, 2012 in Warsaw (Poland) and the final match will be held on the Republican Stadium in Kiev on July 1. Along with the capital of Ukraine, matches will also be held in Kharkov, Lvov and Donetsk.

EURO 2012 Championship will be the last one, the final of which will be reached by 16 teams. Starting with 2016 their number will be increased up to 24. It will be the third joint Championship among European tournaments. Such practice was introduced in 2000, when Football Championship of Europe was held simultaneously in Belgium and the Netherlands. Another joint tournament took place in Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

Choice of two neighboring countries – Ukraine and Poland - is symbolic and explicable. Both countries are connected by long, complicated, but mutually efficient bonds. EURO 2012 is the first Championship that will be held in countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which used to be part of the “socialist camp”. This is kind of opening of Eastern Europe for Western Europe, the holiday of European unity, a great opportunity for presentation of the accepting countries as attractive touristic centers.

Slogan of EURO 2012

The official slogan of the championship is “We create history together”. The logotype is not quite usual. It reflects the skill of “Vytinanky” – paper cutting, traditional for rural areas of Poland and Ukraine.

A flower, symbolizing each of the countries- organizers of the championship, is the base of the emblem. A football is in the center of the composition. Conception of the logotype is connected with the subject of nature. Green forest, yellow sun, blue water are combined in the official emblem of the tournament. Bright shades are the central elements of the color range, which will be used in visual design of the tournament.

The stadiums for EURO 2012

Kiev

Construction of the existing Republican Stadium was started in 1936. It was meant to contain 50 thousand seats. Opening of the stadium was supposed to be held on June 22, 1941, but Germany attacked the USSR right on that day. So official opening of the stadium took place after the victory in 1948. In 1960th – 1970th it was reconstructed and after that started to contain 100 thousand seats. In summer of 1980 football matches of the 22th Olympic Games, held in the Soviet Union, were run there. According to the results of the last reconstruction for the Championship of 2012, roominess will become 69004 seats, due to broadening of gangways to sectors, VIP- boxes, seats for commentators and the Press and disabled people. A shed made of modern materials has been constructed over the tribunes, which will cover all the seats. A gallery, which will enable visitors to leave the second tier of the tribunes and territory of the stadium, will be built on the level of upper sectors into the perimeter of the stadium.

Donetsk

“Donbas Arena”, containing 50 thousands seats is the first stadium in Eastern Europe, planned and constructed according to UEFA standards for stadiums of “Elite” category. Total cost of the project, including the park, located around “Arena”, is 400 million dollars. The stadium was built in 2006-2009. Design of “Donbas Arena” was developed by “Arup Sport”, which had created such stadiums as “Manchester City” (England), “Allianz Arena” (Germany), “Valencia” (Barcelona) and “Sydney” (Australia). Thanks to the unusual designer`s solution – effect of hovering roof, Donetsk arena reminds a “flying saucer” in shape. The main peculiarity of the stadium is its oval shape and fully glazed façade. The roof of the arena is declined from the North to the South, reproducing declivity of the landscape, strengthening natural lightning and airing of the field.

The interior design of the arena is meant to place visitors in one “bowl”, but not on four different tribunes. Construction of “Donbas Arena” foresees total-lot visibility of the field from any point of viewers` tribunes. There are 196 seats for disabled people available.

Action on the field is simultaneously broadcasted on two LED screens; each of them is 92 square meters in size. These are one of the biggest screens in Europe.

“Donbas Arena” is home stadium of “Shahter” football club and cultural center of Donbas capital.

Kharkov

Stadium “Metallist” in Kharkov is the oldest of the stadiums, on which matches of the championship will be held. It is the central sport arena of the city, which was the capital of the USSR in 1919 – 1934. Opening of this once biggest stadium in Ukraine took place in 1926. It was called “Traktor” at that time and afterwards it changed its name several times. It has been called “Metallist” since 1967 and it has become home stadium for this club.

The stadium hosted first international matches in 1927: combined team of the city played versus teams of Germany, Austria and Great Britain.

During the World War Two the stadium was destroyed. Later on it survived a number of reconstructions, the last of which took place in 1979. In 1992 “Metallist” stadium and cash pavilion were put on the Register of the National Cultural heritage of Ukraine.

“Metallist” was reconstructed for two years by the Championship of Europe. Opening of the completely new stadium took place on December 5, 2009. Unique metal construction, supports of which don`t transpierce the stadium and do not diminish visibility of the field, has been built. The new shed bears on 24 iron V-form supports, placed around the Stadium. So, the roof doesn’t overload the tribunes. The new system of lightening is fixed right on the roof of the arena. Two LED BARCO Screens are placed in the stadium. The stadium is also equipped with “spider” – camera: when operating it, an operator can shoot from any point of the field, both from the ground level and from bird`s flight height.

The total capacity of the stadium after reconstruction is 41307 seats, out of which 438 seats are for VIP guests and 104 seats are meant for disabled people.

Lvov

The stadium in the Western capital of Ukraine is called “Lemberg” - it was the German name of the city at times, when this area of Ukraine was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Lvov sports arena, like the one in Donetsk, is being built as the 5th generation stadium. “Construction Bureau of Albert Wimmer” became the developer of the project. It projected stadiums for holding the finals of the Football Championship of Europe in 2008 and is also building a stadium in Warsaw. Lvov Company “Arnika” worked together with the Austrians.

Capacity of the stadium is 33400 seats, about 300 of which are meant for honored guest in the VIP zone on the third level and about 150 seats in the skybox zone on the fourth level.

On the whole, Lvov stadium will have four floors. The first of them is intended for underground parking, the other two – for double- level tribunes, VIP-sector and other subsidiary premises. Great visibility of the field is provided by absence of so-called “dead zones” and up-to-date lightning, ensuring efficient video recording. The stadium will have two screens on northern and southern sides. The central passage of the stadium is formed in the way, enabling to place catering points there.

There will be special stands for disabled people and a system of ramps from the northern part of the arena. Disabled people will be lifted to upper sectors by special elevators.
