Kiev cable car St. Sophia’s Cathedral St. Sophia’s Cathedral and the former monastery area is a national reserve, historical and cultural monument of global importance. In 1990 it was included in the World Heritage List. St. Sophia’s Cathedral is the most ancient architectural monument of Kievan Rus. It is one of the biggest Christian churches in ancient times. The Cathedral was built by the Byzantine masters in honor of Yaroslav’s the Wise victory over nomadic tribe of pechenegs. In the 17th century it was rebuilt in the Ukrainian baroque style. The visitors can be amazed with 3 000 sq. m of original 11th century frescoes and 260 sq. m of 11th century original mosaics in the cathedral. | Odessa catacombs The only of its kind in Ukraine underground museum was opened in 1969. The museum is located on the site of Nerubayske catacombs. These are the oldest in the Odessa region catacombs. For several centuries shell rock was quarried there as the building material used for construction of Odessa. Therefore there are three levels of catacombs. The catacombs are 12-14 m deep catacombs. During the World War II one of the major partisan (guerrilla) groups in the region was located in the catacombs. Museum of Partisan Glory is a recreated underground guerrilla camp, where you can get acquainted with mode of life of partisans. The partisans’ base was equipped with a bath and a kitchen, a shooting gallery and a staff, male and female dormitories, a recreation room and a small arms store room. The archival documents and Odessa underground organization members’ photos are displayed in the museum building. Boat trip along the coastline Boat trip along the coastline of Odessa is one of the most popular among tourists visiting Odessa. You will enjoy the beautiful panorama of Odessa, the view of the majestic Potemkin’s Staircase, the famous beaches of Langeron, Otrada and Arcadia.
