This museum is one of the largest art museums in Ukraine. The museum is located in the area of the Kiev-Pechersk Preserve. It is situated in the former Metropolitan’s chambers with the former inner Annunciation Church.
The museum was founded as one of the departments of the Municipal Museum of Antiquities and Art (now it is known as the National Art Museum of Ukraine) in 1899. Now there are over 75 thousand works of folk and professional decorative arts of Ukraine from the fifteenth century till nowadays.
The inner space of the museum is 1500 square meters big area. There are all kinds of folk art of Ukraine there. You can see carpet weaving and weaving, embroidery, ceramics, carving and painting, leather working, horn, metal and glass items, porcelain, painted Easter eggs and iconography. The samples of the nineteenth and early twentieth century folk costume from all regions of Ukraine are the gem of museum collection.
There are some unique things in the museum collection. They are the 15th – 17th century clay tiles, the carved wooden cross set in silver which was made in 1576, the 18th – 19th century Cossack pipes and powder flasks, the 18th century silk woven belts, the 18th century church embroidery, items produced at the leading porcelain and faience enterprises of Ukraine in the 18th – 19th centuries.
You will be amazed with the largest in Ukraine collection of paintings by the world-famous artist Mary Prymachenko (1909-1997). There are over 500 paintings in the inimitable, original style of folk primitivism. There is the collection of the paintings by the Catherine Bilokur (1900-1961) too.
