This is the third in time of opening museum connected with Taras Shevchenko`s life in Kiev and the second memorial one. The hut on Vyshgorodskaya Street in Kiev area called “Priorka” was built at the beginning of the 1850th. Shevchenko stayed there for two weeks during his last visit to Ukraine in August 1859.
In 1960th all neighboring one-storey constructions were demolished, but the hut stayed intact due to the fact of stay of the outstanding figure in it. In 1989 it was decided to turn the hut into a museum. It demanded major reconstruction and another one was carried out at the beginning of the current century.
Now items of everyday life of that time are collected in the museum: tableware, clay articles are widely represented, national costumes, paintings and photos, depicting the Kobzar, furniture and household stuff. That is what makes the museum interesting – reproduction of everyday life of 1850th, the world of things and items, which surrounded Shevchenko and his contemporaries. And, of course, there are memorial things of the poet in the “Hut in Priorka”.
