The famous Ukrainian composer, pianist, teacher, musical-public figure Victor Kosenko (1896-1938) lived only 42 years. Kotsyubinskiy Str.. The Museum is under guardianship of the Union of Composers of Ukraine.
Childhood and youth years of Kosenko passed in Warsaw, where he studied fortepiano playing from prominent musicians. He showed great musical talent from his childhood. He finished Petersburg conservatory, class of the piano. In 1928-38 Kosenko was a teacher, then professor (1932) of the Kiev Musical-Dramatic Institute (which has become conservatory since 1934).
Kosenko is a bright representative of domestic romantic music of the first half of XX century, the founder of the leading genres of Ukrainian fortepiano and chamber music. His works belong to the instrumental, vocal, vocal-instrumental, choral and symphonic genres. Musical style of composer is based on composition of Ukrainian national melodics with achievements of European music. His «11 etudes in form of ancient dances», «24 child's plays», cycles of romances on verses of A. Pushkin, A. Block, M. Lermontov, F. Tyutchev, P. Tychina, «Classic trio» for a violin, violoncellos and fortepiano, cello sonatas, «Heroic overture» and «Moldavian poem» for a symphonic orchestra became part of classic heritage of Ukrainian music. The early period of creative work of Kosenko is marked by influence of music of F. Chopin, P. Rakhmaninov, A. Skryabin. Deep lyricism and emotionality, combination of achievements of West-European and domestic professional music, creative review of national folklore - all these are distinctive features of mature style.
V. Kosenko was popular not only as a composer, but also as a brilliant pianist, leading wide concert activity. Along with European classics, he propagandized Russian, Ukrainian academic music, including L. Revutskiy and B. Lyatoshinskiy, M. Verikovskiy, P. Kozitskiy.
Kosenko is one of the founders of Ukrainian Soviet musical culture. Chamber trio, created by him, conducted great elucidative activity on factories, military units, at schools, etc.
Since 2001 V. P. Kosenko Prize was found by National Union of Composers of Ukraine and Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is annually handed to composers for prominent achievements in sphere of musical creation for children and the youth.
The museum of memory of prematurely deceased composer operated honorary until 1964, then became a memorial cabinet, and from 2007 became an apartment-museum. Union of Composers and musical public of the city actively conduct concerts, lectures, musical meetings here. More than 5 thousand exhibits are kept in the apartment. On a table near the bed, there still stand funny animals with which the composer listened to the radio receiver: if he liked the music, the animals looked in the direction of the receiver, if he didn`t - at the opposite side.
The Museum, where the interior of 1930th has been kept, is very informative for those, who are interested in the musical culture of Ukraine, especially in the period of 1920-30th.
