The theatre on Lypky was founded in 1924 by Olexander Solomarskyi and Iryna Deyeva. Originally the troupe of the theatre included also the future company of the puppet theatre. The play “Mowgli” was the first public performance of the first in Ukraine theatre for a young audience. Well-known masters of the Ukrainian art A. Buchma, V, Tatlin, A. Lundin, V. Vilner, K. Koshevskyi, B. Vershylov, M. Foregger, Meller, and even K. Stanislavskyi (play “The Blue Bird”) co-operated with Kyiv theatre for young spectator in the pre-war period . In the post-war era stage-directors V. Dovbyschenko, O. Solomarskyi, А. Barsegyan, D. Tchaikovskyi, V. Patsunov, V. Sudyin, M. Merzlikin, V. Bugayov gave the theatre a start in the high level of professionalism, innovative searches and experimental works.
In 1954 the Theatre of young spectator was situated in the Lypky district – the historical place of Kyiv on Pechersk. There are two stages for 408 and 80 seats in the theatre building. In 2004 the theatre was given the rank "Academic".
In 1991 Victor Girych became the artistic leader of the theatre. Today he is the leading specialist in staging for children, who knows psychology of the children and lines a stage action up to give the child strong emotional impressions and get him fascinated by the art.
The theatre on Lypky tries to talk to young people about cultural wealth on the understandable language using modern styles and directions in plays. The main feature of the theatre is its direction to the artistic necessaries of all age groups - small children, young people and adults. At the present time the repertoire includes more than 30 plays of the well-known dramatists: W. Shakespeare, Jean-BaptisteMolière, Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, A.. Chekhov, V. Nabokov, I. Franko, М. Gogol, М. Twain, E. Goffman, the brothers Grimm, A. Lindgren, I. Zlatopolskyi, О’Henry, Lesya Ukrayinka, Lope de Vega and other.
The theatre was awarded with "Kyiv Pektoral" prize as the best play for children in 1993 (play "Columbine, Pierrot, and Harlequin"), in 1999 (play "Adventures of Tom Sawyer"), and in 2001 (play "Nikita the Fox"). In 2002 the play "Wolves and…" was awarded with the same prize as the best stage-director debut. In 2004on the 6th Moscow international television-theatrical festival the play "Heart of Pierrot " won the first prize in a nomination "For a high stage culture". And in 2007 the Theatre of young spectator on Lypky took part in the theatrical competition "From antiquity to contemporaneity" in Evpatoria, and got the "Special prize of the jury" for the play “Chimera”.
Well-known Ukrainian stage-directors Yuriy Odunokyi, Stanislav Moiseyev, Andriy Balaban, Andriy Кrytyanko, Evgeniy Kurman made a creative start here. And every year young talented actors and stage-directors come to the theatre. Therefore the creative search and creation of experimental plays do not cease in the Theatre on Lypky.
