In December 2009, totally unexpected for the age of crisis, a new theatrical scene appeared in the capital – Art Center “New Ukrainian Theatre”. Or to be more precise, it recommenced its work. The founder and the artistic manager of the theatre – director Vitaliy Kino, the actors – graduating students of his course in Kiev Theatrical college.
For the first time “New Ukrainian Theatre” was created in 1998. The “pressure group” of the founders consisted then from young painters, director Vitaliy Kino, the pupil of Eduard Mitnitskiy, who was starting his creative career, scene-designer Anastasiya Kononenko, the pupil of Daniil Lider; composer and pianist Maria Portnikova – the pupil of Elena Verikovskaya; theatre expert Alexander Gaiduk – the pupil of Valentina Zabolotnaya and Anna Lipkivskiy; actress Maria Shraibman – the pupil of Yulia Tkachenko and others.
The idea to resume “New Ukrainian Theatre” on separate “stationary” stage appeared when Vitaliy Kino graduated his own actor course in Kiev College of theatre and cinema. The first performances of the updated theatre were the degree performances adapted for the new scene. The theatre opened its doors on 19-th of December 2009 in a small, but comfortable house, built in 19-th century in the centre of the Kiev, not far from Sofia Kievska.
Here we have 2 theatres in one. The first one is for kids, it’s called “Ladybird”, its repertoire consists of 3 performances now (“Ivasik-Telesik”, “How lion cub and a turtle sang a song”, “Winter tale”) and a holiday New Year’s matinee. The second one is the “New Ukrainian Theatre” with totally adult, well thought-out, dramatic works – “Bitter” after play of almost the same name by I. Karpenko-Kariy, tragic compilation “Shakespiriada” and “Defenceless creatures” after stories by Chekhov.
And this repertoire is performed by, maybe, the youngest troupe in Kiev: mean age of the actors doesn’t exceed 20 years. Theatre hopes to develop the collaboration with young directors, painters, dramatists etc.
